Yoga nidra is one of the most effective techniques among such practices. Let’s know about it.

What Is It ?

Yoga nidra, also known as ‘yogic sleep’, is a simplified form of relaxation technique. It is a state of dynamic sleep- relaxation with awareness.

Where Does It Come From ?

A state called Yoga nidra is mentioned in the Upanishads and the Mahabharata. It is linked to meditation in Shaiva and Buddhist tantras.

Though parts of it were known and practised since ancient times, systematized practice of it was introduced by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in 1960s. He constructed system of relaxation through guided meditation.

He explained yoga nidra as a state between wakefulness and sleep. Yoga nidra by Swami Satyananda Saraswati includes eight stages- internalisation, resolve(sankalpa), rotation of consciousness, breath awareness, manifestation of opposite, creative visualization, repeated resolve(sankalpa) and externalisation. Swami Satyananda used this technique on his spiritual successor, Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati, from the age of four and taught him teachings, learnings and knowledge about multiple languages by yoga nidra.

Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati

“When awareness is separate and distinct from mental activity,
when waking, dream and deep sleep pass like clouds,
yet awareness of Self remains,
this is the experience of total relaxation…
That is why, in tantra,
yoga nidra is said to be the doorway to Samadhi.”
– Swami Satyananda
